Hurwitz Verdict Expected Today - Supporters to Attend

Hurwitz Verdict Expected Today - Supporters Urged to Attend; A. DeLuca; War on Doctors/Pain Crisis; 2007-04-27.

One of Dr. Hurwitz’ lawyers, Richard Sauber, posted this message as a Comment on TierneyLab late Thursday:

“The jury in the Hurwitz case indicated that they are likely to return a verdict tomorrow, Friday April 27, probably in the late afternoon. A show of support would be appreciated.” — Richard Sauber, lawyer for Dr Hurwitz

If any Hurwitz supporters can possibly make it to Alexandria Va. today to witness what will very likely be the conclusion to this important and historic case, the courtroom is walking distance from the train station which serves both Amtrack and Metro trains. I really wish I could make it, but I can’t. If you go, beam a big smile and hug to Billy for me.

The address and information phone number: U.S. Government District Court; 401 Courthouse Square; Alexandria, Virginia; 22314; 703-299-2100.

The course of the retrial can be reviewed in John Tierney’s ongoing coverage of the retrial in his recent NY Times column: At Trial, Pain Has a Witness, and blog posts: Most Serious Charges Dismissed, Jury Instructions, and, Hurwitz’ Mysterious Motive.

I try to clarify some of the deceptive and confusing terminology in war on docs cases in ‘The Bounds of Medical Practice’ and the ‘Standard of Care’ - April 23. (originally a TierneyLab comment)

Reports from trial observers Mary Baluss and myself can be found in recent posts here on War on Docs/Pain Crisis, in reverse chronological order:

* Hurwitz Jury Deliberations Continue - Mary Baluss, Esq.; April 25 * Hurwitz Update: Jury Instructions - Mary Baluss, Esq.; April 23 * Yeehaa! Good News at Last from the Hurwitz Trial; Mary Baluss, Esq., April 18 * Retrial Update - Observations on Court Proceedings; DeLuca; April 18

It has been a rough three years for pain doctors, patients and advocates since Dr. Hurwitz was convicted, shackled and led from the courtroom to prison in December 2004, shortly before the tidal wave in the Indian Ocean. [see: A Painful Decision; Ron Libby; December 2004] It sounds trite, but it really is hard for me to get that this is it, today is the day we find out if and when William Hurwitz will be returned to his friends, family and productive life as a free man.

OK, I’m going to say it. Just one, then back to pacing and praying. If you chant, chant this. If you meditate, meditate on this. If you can influence events at a distance with your mind, then psychotelekinese this:

TIME SERVED TIME SERVED TIME SERVED TIME SERVED
